Frequently Asked Questions

What is a ScanGauge and what does it do?

A ScanGauge is a compact, plug-and-play vehicle monitor that connects to your car or truck's diagnostic port under the dash. It delivers real-time digital gauges, a trip computer, fuel economy tracking, and a built-in diagnostic code reader — all in one device. Whether you're driving a passenger car, towing a caravan, heading off-road, or operating a heavy diesel truck, ScanGauge puts critical vehicle data right in front of you while you drive.

Is my car or vehicle compatible with ScanGauge?

ScanGauge covers two product lines. The ScanGauge 2 and ScanGauge 3 work with virtually all OBD-II compliant cars, SUVs, 4WDs, and light commercials — in Australia, most vehicles manufactured from 2010 onwards. For heavy diesel trucks, buses, and heavy equipment, the ScanGauge-D and ScanGauge-KR are designed specifically for J1939 and J1708 protocols. Check our compatibility page to confirm your specific make and model.

How difficult is ScanGauge to install?

Installation requires no tools, no wiring, and no mechanic. Simply plug the included cable into the diagnostic connector under your dashboard, then mount the display using the supplied suction cup or velcro mount. ScanGauge draws power directly from the diagnostic port so there is nothing else to connect. Most drivers are up and running in under five minutes.

What is the difference between ScanGauge II and ScanGauge 3?

Both models offer real-time gauges, trip computers, and diagnostic code reading. The ScanGauge 3 is the newer model featuring a colour touchscreen with over 16 million colour options, up to 9 simultaneous gauges on screen, automatic X-Gauge configuration, audible and visual alarms, and Wi-Fi firmware updates. The ScanGauge II uses a straightforward 5-button interface and is a reliable, no-fuss choice for everyday drivers.

What are X-Gauges and why do they matter?

X-Gauges unlock vehicle-specific data beyond standard OBD-II — things like transmission temperature, oil temperature, exhaust gas temperature (EGT), and DPF soot levels. The ScanGauge 3 can automatically scan your vehicle to find available X-Gauges for your specific make and model. For heavy diesel vehicles, the ScanGauge-D and ScanGauge-KR include a special feature to develop custom X-Gauges specific to your truck or rig.

Can ScanGauge read and clear the check engine light?

Yes. ScanGauge instantly reads both set and pending Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) when your check engine light comes on and displays the meaning of each code in plain language — no trip to a mechanic just for a diagnosis. You can also clear codes and reset the warning light once the issue is resolved. ScanGauge also records the conditions present at the time of the fault — such as RPM and coolant temperature — to help pinpoint the cause.

How does ScanGauge help save money on fuel?

ScanGauge displays live fuel economy data including litres per 100km, fuel cost per trip, and litres per hour so you can see in real time how your driving habits affect consumption. Many drivers find measurable savings simply from the instant feedback on throttle and speed. The ScanGauge-KR takes this further for professional truck drivers, adding dedicated gauges showing actual profit or loss relative to fuel usage — ideal for those paid by the kilometre or hour.

Which ScanGauge is right for my heavy diesel truck or bus?

Heavy diesel trucks, buses, and machinery use J1939 and J1708 protocols rather than standard OBD-II. ScanGauge Australia offers two dedicated models:

  • ScanGauge-D — ideal for owner-operators and fleet vehicles needing real-time engine monitoring and diagnostics. Uses a dual connector cable supporting both the J1939 (9-pin) and J1708 (6-pin) diagnostic ports.
  • ScanGauge-KR — includes everything in the ScanGauge-D plus additional gauges focused on fuel cost and profitability per kilometre, making it the preferred choice for professional long-haul drivers.

Compatible brands include Kenworth, Freightliner, Mack, Volvo, International, Mercedes-Benz, Cummins, Caterpillar, and many more. Learn more about heavy diesel compatibility.
